Is There a "Hidden Inheritance" Waiting for You? How to Find Unclaimed Money

Image
Have you ever found a twenty-dollar bill in the pocket of a coat you haven't worn in years? It’s a great feeling. Now, imagine finding a forgotten utility deposit, an uncashed paycheck from a summer job, or an old bank account from a state you haven't lived in for a decade. According to the government, there are billions of dollars in unclaimed property just sitting in state and federal vaults, waiting for the rightful owners to claim it.  Here is how you can go on a "treasure hunt" for your family’s missing money using official, free resources. 1. The State Treasure Chest Most unclaimed money is held at the state level. When a business (like a bank or an insurance company) loses track of you, they are legally required to turn your money over to the state’s unclaimed property office. How to Search: Start at USA.gov/unclaimed-money . This site provides a direct map and links to every state's official treasury website. MissingMoney.com: Most states participate in...

The Unexpected Lessons in a Sink of Dishes: Biblical Stewardship & Hospitality

Image
It was Sunday morning and I found myself doing dishes. As I turned on my playlist to get my heart in the right space for worship, I noticed the mix in the sink: kids' plates, everyday mugs, and even some of the fancy tea party dishes. What did these dishes represent? Food, friends, and fun. They were a testament to a weekend of people being welcomed into our home for various events—from a scrapbook get-together and a Bible study to a kids' playdate and a birthday celebration. My wife has the gift of hospitality , which is the quality of receiving and treating guests in a warm, friendly, and generous way. Whether it's a large party, a Bible study, or just a cup of coffee, we've been blessed to use our home as a place to worship God through hospitality. We don't have a perfect house with everything finished, but we do try to make it a welcoming environment where people can relax and feel at home. The Bible is clear on this. Leviticus 19:33-34 tells us, “When an alie...

Beyond Riches: How Essentialism Unlocks True Financial Freedom (and Purpose)

Introduction: The Fleeting Pursuit of Wealth This morning, as I spent time in God's Word, a passage from Proverbs 23 :4-5 resonated deeply: "Do not toil to acquire wealth: be discerning enough to desist. When your eyes light on it. It is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven." Have you ever felt caught in the relentless pursuit of more, only to find that wealth, when made the sole focus, can feel incredibly fleeting? It's a powerful reminder that if growing our net worth is our only life goal, we might be chasing something that "suddenly sprouts wings." Investing in What Truly Lasts Proverbs 23:23 offers a profound contrast: "Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding." This verse challenges us to consider what we're truly using our wealth for. Are we simply accumulating it, storing it in silos, and deriving our self-worth from account balances? Or are we leveraging the blessi...

Your Unique Financial Journey: Finding Your Roadmap

Image
Your Unique Financial Journey: Finding Your Roadmap Recently I got the opportunity to complete a Multi Day, Multi state, Multi time zone road trip with a couple of my boys/men, a cat and a dog. Seeing how others were completing their own journeys reminded me of how we are all on different financial journeys. We aren’t all going to the same location. We aren’t all driving similar vehicles. We aren’t all using the same roadmaps. We aren’t all listening to the same road trip playlist. Some of us are all about getting to our destination as fast as possible. Others of us want to enjoy the sites and see the World’s largest ball of twine. It is important for everyone in the vehicle to be going the same way as long as they are in the vehicle. It’s important for you to have a financial roadmap and that you listen to and agree with the needs and desires of the people in the financial vehicle with you. Just like a road trip, your personal finance journey is deeply personal. There's no sing...
